A Game of Thrones, by George R. R. Martin is epic fantasy with the kid gloves removed. The first book of A Song of Ice and Fire. Can’t recommend it enough.

I’m now up the to fourth book in the Song of Ice and Fire series “A Feast of Crow” and the series keeps getting better. George R. R. Martin constantly keeps you guessing as you never know who will live or who will die. No major character is safe
