I’m sorry to hear of your loss. I enjoy hearing about middle school from a teacher’s perspective as my older son is in 6th grade. I also enjoyed the Pocket and the Pendant and was excited to hear about the sequel. My son is listening to it right now.
It has always been easier to get him to listen to a story rather than to read it. I think that some kids’ brains are wired to be readers and for others it just doesn’t hold the same appeal. My younger son is a reader. It was clear when he was very young. He just always wanted to read. He taught himself to read while he was still in preschool and now, in kindergarten, he reads for fun. He was so excited when he figured out that he could read “in his head.” Both boys were read to extensively when they were little. We didn’t do anything differently for our second son. He just gets pleasure out of reading.
So, you can imagine my excitement when my older son started reading for an hour at at a time. I had been waiting for a story to catch his attention. He picked out Rick Riordan’s The Lightening Thief at a school book fair and read it in a week. He asked me to read it, so I did and it was fun. We’ve picked up the second in the series, The Sea of Monsters, which was just released. Riordan’s website is: http://www.rickriordan.com/

I truly feel that there is a book out there for everyone! We just have to find it. Sometimes it takes a long while before it is found. I will grab a Riordan book and see what it is all about. It may be awhile before we have him on the show - both Lorrie and I read the books before we have a guest on the show.
