Banning of books…

Miami-Dade School Board has decided to ban a children’s book about life in Cuba. The book was brought to the attention of the school board earlier this year by a parent. The decision ended with a 6-3 vote to ban the book about Cuba along with 23 other books in the same series. To get the whole story and the comments check out the Miami Herold article.

I cannot believe in this day and age we are still banning books in this country. I know people try all the time, but that fact that any library or school would go for it. Wow. This was upsetting to read.

If this is the series I think it is.. all the books look like they were made with the same template.. and only the country names and a few things were changed.

Banning the books is a bit extreme, but they have a number of inaccuracies and mistruths through out the entire series.

I don’t know what’s worse. Banning books, or educational companies mass producing inaccurate texts.

Though, I won’t even get into the “education system’s ” text book process. You guys, as teachers, are likely all too familiar with that little nasty business of kickbacks and under table payments.
