I just finished this one and found it to be a bit better than Moon Called. I really was confused about the motivations of the characters at the end of Moon Called, but this one made sense. My only concern (and this comes from reading too much LKH) is the multiple partners set up for Mercy. I don't want her to be overcome with arduer and, well, you know.

  2. Kristinn says:

The same as above, other then the part about Laurell K. Hamilton.
No. 1 is exactly what I wanted to write, so I did not want to write it again, other that I have not read much Laurell K. Hamilton. And I do not know what "arduer" means, but I understand the sentence.

    P.S.
It would not have come as elegantly from me!

  3. Jane says:

Arduer is this concept that Laurell K Hamilton dreamed up that allows Anita to engage in orgiastic sexual encounters with various creatures, shifters, vampires, etc.

  4. Is "arduer" supposed to be a paranormal version of "ardor"? If not, I don't get it, either.

  5. Jane says:

I think it was in blue moon (book 6 or so) wherein Anita killed a female werewolf. This female werewolf had a type of spirit that was absorbed inside Anita called Arduer. The Arduer (a play off, i'm sure ardor) needs to be fed with a constant diet of blood and/or sex. Since Anita won't drink blood or eat people, she decides to feed the spirit by having lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of sex. In each successive book (I stopped reading after Narcissus in Chains), the sex scenes, group sex scenes, etc. have increasingly become the focus of the story to the detriment of all else such as plot nd character development. Everyone wants Anita, regardless of their sexual orientation, their personal likes or dislikes. Anita's whole world is the arduer and it makes it arduous to read. I've given up.

While I like a good sex scene, it needs to integrated into the story. Unfortunately, what started out as a good urbanfantasy series has turned into really bad erotica wherein Anita's prudishness is conveniently overcome by this arduer thing. Ironically, she can have sex with any number of people but is really angry at the thought of her lovers having sex outside her circle. It's a Mary Sue-ism at its worst, imo.
