Review: “Queen of Dragons” by Shana Abé

February 9, 2008 by Debbie Walker

Maricara was born a serf but her special gifts raise her up to be the Princess of her tribe. Keeping her people safe is her first priority. Kimber, Earl of Chasen is the Alpha of his tribe and when the two tribes find out about each other, Kimber is expected to wed Maricara. Both tribes have different rules and lifestyles, but they all have one main thing in common. To keep themselves and what they are secret from the humans. When an old enemy, the sanf inimicus suddenly start hunting their kind again, Maricara and Kimber must work together to save their people.

If you want to read a book about dragons that can change into a human form or disappear into smoke, read this book. If you want to read a romance where the woman and man are both strong leading characters, read this book. Although the damsel does get into distress at one point there’s no doubt in your mind she could and eventually would get herself out of it. Maricara is no shrinking violet and Kimber is no overbearing aggressor. They are evenly matched and work together for the benefit of their tribes without any of the usual romantic cookie-cutter story lines. The slow getting to know each other dance is wonderfully written without either character losing any of their own strength and independence.

I loved this book and can’t wait to find out what happens next. And I’ll have to go back and find The Smoke Thief and The Dream Thief, the previous books in this series.
