Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud changed the way I think about storytelling. Addressing story structure, character and the development of an artist, McCloud challenged the way I think about creating a story and how to approach the mediums I work within. His style is easy to follow, using words and pictures to convey complex ideas about art and narrative in a fashion that’s easy to understand. Understanding Comics is a book I’d recommend to anyone interested in art, the life of an artist, and telling stories.

J.R. Blackwell is a writer and photographer. She wrote Shelter in Place, a game about the zombie apocalypse, which was published by Galileo Games in 2011. Her newest game, Velociraptor! Cannibalism! raised over $40k on Kickstarter. J.R. writes about supervillains, vampires and troublemakers over at her website: www.jrblackwell.com.
