Jim Baen passes

Several days ago, Jim Baen of Baen Books suffered a stroke and was in serious condition. Sadly, he passed away yesterday.

Baen Books is a leader not only in SF publishing, but also is well know for innovation and a willingness to try new things. Jim was a driving force behind this and will be missed.

I'm sure several authors he's mentored over the years will have many great things to say about Jim over the next several days. David Drake is among the first.

Update:David has some updated information:

Toni Weisskopf and Dave suggest that people who wish to make a memorial donation purchase copies of THE WORLD TURNED UPSIDE DOWN and donate them to libraries or teenagers of their acquaintance.

Remembrances of Jim's life will be held at Trinoc*Con in Raleigh, NC Saturday, July 22 and Lacon IV, the Worldcon, in Los Angeles, CA in August.
